Today we are sharing how to crochet an octagon in our series of Crochet Basic Shapes. An octagon is a shape with 8 sides and this basic shape pattern is a great choice for making all kinds of different things!
If you’ve tried any of our EPP Crochet Patterns, you’ll notice that many of them use our basic octagon shape for creating some of the different designs. You can also use Octagons to make patchwork crochet plush creatures, like our adorable amigurumi octopus!
You’ll find the free pattern for our crochet octagon shape below. If you find this useful or you’d like a printable guide to reference over and over again, please be sure to grab our PDF book Crochet Basic Shapes complete with directions for all of our crochet shapes as well as some very fun project ideas!
Our book also includes written patterns for both the double crochet and single crochet shapes!
Crochet Octagon Shape Pattern
This is a simple pattern to work that uses double crochet stitches.
We didn’t include gauge or what types of yarn to use for this pattern simply because you truly could use any yarn or hook sizes you like depending on your project. This is the great thing about these basic shapes – there is no limit to what you could make with them!
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern:
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- dc: double crochet

32 dc.
Round 3: Ch 3, (3 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc) around, end last repeat (3 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 dc), join
with sl st in top of beg ch – 48 dc.
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, (3 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 5 dc) around, end last repeat (3 dc in next dc, dc in
next 3 dc), join with sl st in top of beg ch – 64 dc. Fasten off.
See, it’s that easy!
You’ll be crocheting octagons in no time!
Hi! If I wanted to keep increasing the rounds how would I go about doing that? Would round 5 be:
Ch 3, dc in next dc, (3 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 7 dc) around, end last repeat (3 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc), join with sl st in top of beg ch??
I am trying to make place mats for my table.
Thank you for your time!
From my understanding, you would increase the amount of times you dc singularly by two each time.
So for the next row, you would ch 3, dc singularly in the next 6 stitches, (this counts as 7), 3 dc in next stitch, dc in next 7 stitches, repeat until end and sl st.
The next one you would do 9, and so on. Hope this helps
Thanks Emma!
